How to get more reviews for your Google Workspace add-on
Reviews sit at the top of your Marketplace listing and shape almost every install decision, especially while you have few of them. The Marketplace gives you no review-request API and no in-product prompt, so getting more comes down to asking well, at the right moment, within Google's rules. Here is what works.
Ask at the moment of success
The best time to ask is right after your add-on visibly did its job: the mail merge was sent, the report was generated, the slides were formatted. That is when the value is concrete and the goodwill is real. A single quiet line in your add-on's completion screen ("Enjoying it? A review on the Marketplace helps a lot") outperforms any popup at install time, when the user has experienced nothing yet.
Outside the product, the same logic applies: a changelog email announcing a requested feature, or the resolution message of a support thread that ended well, are natural places for a one-line ask.
Make it one click
Every step you add loses people. Link straight to your Marketplace listing, where the Reviews tab lives, and put that link everywhere it is cheap to have: your documentation footer, your onboarding email, your support signature. The user should go from "sure, why not" to the review box in one click.
Reply to the reviews you already have
A Reviews tab where the developer visibly answers reads as a product worth writing to. Replying is built into the Marketplace, though few developers know it: we covered the how and the etiquette in Can you reply to reviews on the Google Workspace Marketplace?. Answered reviews also soften the blow of the occasional one-star: visitors judge you on the response as much as the complaint.
What not to do
Google's developer agreement and program policies are explicit about the shortcuts:
- No incentives. Offering users anything in exchange for a rating, higher or lower, is against the developer agreement.
- No self-inflation. Rating your own product, organizing rating campaigns, or otherwise inflating ratings, reviews or install counts by illegitimate means can get reviews removed and your account sanctioned.
- No gating. Don't lock features behind leaving a review; it is a variant of the same incentive rule, and it produces resentful reviews anyway.
Slow and legitimate wins here: a steady trickle of asked-for, honest reviews compounds, and it survives Google's enforcement sweeps.
Don't miss the reviews you earn
Once the asks start working, reviews will land when you least expect them, and the Marketplace won't tell you. Notify watches your listing and emails you each new review in full, so the thank-you reply that encourages the next reviewer goes out the same day.
